Story of Pushkar

According to the Hindu vedas, Brahma the creator of world tried to kill a demon named Vajranabh with his lotus. In this process the lotus petals of Brahma fell on earth on at three places which result in creating three lakes, Jyestha (major) Madhya (middle) and Kanishth (small) lake. As these lakes were carved out of lotus leaf thus the place is named Pushpa (flower) and eventually to Pushkar.

After killing demon, Brahma wished to perform yajna to cleanse from this killing act so he decided to perform this yajna near main Pushkar lake. During the time yajna, his consort Goddess Sarasvati wasn’t present there so to complete this ritual Brahma married Gayatri, a gurjar girl and completed the yajna. On arrival when Goddess Saraswati came to know about Gayatri, she got furious and cursed Brahma to not to be worshipped anywhere, but later reduced the curse by permitting Brahma’s worship in Pushkar only. According to the legends the temple is more than 2000 years old.
